Birthmother Relocation

In general, if you are intending to do an adoption and have a good support system in place—that is, friends and family that are supporting your adoption plan—and your life is fairly stable, we recommend that you don't move unless there is some other overriding concern.

There are several reasons that you might want to relocate for your adoption. It is completely legal to do so and sometimes there are wonderful advantages.

  • Some birthmothers we work with are homeless and relocation will allow them to get into an apartment quickly.
  • The agencies and attorneys tha we work with, that provide materity housing, can provide legal advice and counceling.
  • It may be difficult to legally provide you with the living expenses you need in the state you currently reside.

If you decide to relocate as part of your adoption plan, the agencies and attorneys that provide maternity housing and apartments will assist you with travel plans. We have had birthmothers travel by car, train, bus or airplane. It is usually permissible for your mother or friend or boyfriend and your children to go with you. It's your choice.

Mindy was my lifeline and my sole support. Having that extra support help make the adoption possible. I could never have done it on my own.

"I was so scared to do this but once I talked to Erin (my caseworker) I felt as peace with my decision.
